With the last episode of Game of Thrones launching, HBO needed an iconic way to say farewell to the series that has meant so much to so many through 8 years. Traditional advertising would struggle to capture the scale, atmosphere and cultural impact of the series in a memorable way.
The world of Game of Thrones feels medieval, dramatic and larger than life — and Copenhagen already contains architecture that evokes that exact feeling. By placing the series directly into the city’s historic atmosphere, fans and passersby could experience the show in an unexpected and immersive way.
We turned one of Copenhagen’s most medieval-looking landmarks into a live media channel by having the carillonneur play the iconic Game of Thrones intro theme from the tower bells. From the historic tower in Christianshavn — crowned by its twisting golden spire resembling a fire-breathing dragon — the recognisable melody echoed across the city, surprising residents in their everyday routines. Instead of using conventional advertising, the campaign transformed the city itself into a dramatic farewell announcing the last episode, creating curiosity, conversation and instant recognition among fans and non-fans alike.
